Blog #7 "Oedipus the King" by: Sophocles (reflections)
On the other day, the instructor assigned us to read a long play called "Oedipus the King", and I find it very long to read. And once I'm analyzing the play for the essay, it drives me crazy. First of all, the townspeople depends on Oedipus' aid because he is the only one who can protect the people of his country. But somehow there are many misunderstanding throughout the play. So there is a guy named Teiresias and he kept his mouth shut to hide the truth to Oedipus about the killer who murdered Laious, but Oedipus felt betrayed by Teiresias because it caused conflict and he thinks that he is cursed. (Just according to my critical analysis essay) One of the parts of the story that the author used is irony because Oedipus felt that he has done wrong about accusing his friends. But my question is how does he want to rule his kingdom with that kind of excuse? I'd say to me that this is a very shocking story to read and I can't even believe that I'm reading this piece of fudge eating spaghetti which I don't understand what the hell is going on with the characters of the play. I am not going to tell a friend about that story, because this is the worst story I've ever read.

HA! I totally agree that this play can be a rather difficult one to read/understand, but if you break it down it is a very interesting one. There are many factors in this play that Sophocles plays with. He is throwing ideas out about fate and free will, do we control every aspect our our lives or are we completely out of control? Do we really have these repressed thoughts in our childhood?(according to freud) and there are a lot of irony in this play as well.
